Shedding the layers this spring

NEW YORK Eyewitness News reporter Lauren Glassberg has some great tips.

Lots of people are hoping to kick start their routines, and here's another motivating factor. "Self Magazine" found that when the economy goes south, eating habits go south as well.

"We found that 50 percent of people sooth their frayed nerves with food," Tula Karras said.

It's one thing to eat away your stress with healthy food, but that tends not to be the case.

"The problem is that they're not eating fruits and veggies, but fat," she said. "Comfort foods."

So Karras of "Self Magazine," says there are the 12 items you should stock up on and start eating.

For pasta, opt for whole wheat, which has lots of protein. So do lentils. Plus, they have iron and fiber.

Another favorite is raisins.

"If you're craving sugar, it's a healthy way to get your sweet fix," Karras said.

And they're portable. Also, each item costs less than a dollar per serving.

Other favorites include brown rice, snap peas, green tea, broccoli, plain yogurt, bananas, black beans, apples and sweet potatoes.
