Mom, infant rescued by burned neighbor

BRENTWOOD Wendy Maldonado says she was sleeping when Jesus Cabrera knocked on her door and alerted her to the blaze Thursday morning. She handed her 3-month-old daughter out the first-story window to him, then she climbed out too.

Brentwood Fire Chief John Carney says Cabrera had burns over 45 percent of his body. He's hospitalized in critical condition.

The owner of the home was issued two violations by the Town of Islip's Fire Marshal. He's accused of illegally converting his house into a multifamily dwelling.
