Bronx voters to choose borough president

BRONX The winner will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the previous president.

Adolfo Carrión Jr. departed for a new job as director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs.

Anthony Ribustello, an actor who appeared in the Sopranos, is a candidate for borough president. A night before the special election, he's been outspent and outmanned by Ruben Diaz Jr.

"I love the bronx...I want it to be better," Ribustello said.

Diaz is part of a political family powerhouse.

His father is a state senator and former councilman. As an assemblyman, Diaz Jr. has a built-in advantage -- political connections that allow him to tap into a network of volunteers, who were manning the phones on election eve trying to get out the vote.

"We're really anxious to get to work to solve some of the issue put before us," Diaz said.

Problems brought on by the recession such as a need for jobs in the Bronx and meaningful development.

Both candidates agree on that as the campaign wraps up and the voters go to the polls..

The new borough president will serve the remainder of Carrión's term, through Dec. 31.
