Former NYPD officer sentenced to jail

NEW YORK /*Rafael Lora*/ was sentenced 1 to 3 years and was released on bail pending an appeal in the shooting death of /*Fermin Arzu*/.

He faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Lora was convicted of second-degree manslaughter in a non-jury trial in April.

He dodged a charge of first-degree manslaughter. In the weeks before the verdict, prosecutors asked the judge to consider lower charges.

The deadly shooting happened after a drunken Arzu crashed his minivan into a parked car outside the officer's Bronx home.

The officer claims he fired in self-defense when Arzu trapped him with the minivan door and dragged him.
