Stocks struggle to gains

Investors can't seem to get the rally back up to full speed again. Stocks ended mostly higher but well off their best levels of the day Thursday following three straight days of losses.

Upbeat reports on the economy lifted the market but many traders still think stocks may give up more ground after the Standard & Poor's 500 index jumped as much as 40 percent over the past three months.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average is up 58 at 8,555. The S&P 500 index is up 7 at 918, and the Nasdaq is down 1 at 1,808.

About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1 billion shares.
