Upbeat reports on the economy lifted the market but many traders still think stocks may give up more ground after the Standard & Poor's 500 index jumped as much as 40 percent over the past three months.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average is up 58 at 8,555. The S&P 500 index is up 7 at 918, and the Nasdaq is down 1 at 1,808.
About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1 billion shares.
