Helping women with ovarian and breast cancer

September 20, 2009 What is SHARE about?

SHARE is an organization of breast and ovarian cancer survivors who provide emotional support, practical advice, and information to women and men dealing with these diseases. As survivors, we have a unique understanding of what it's like to face breast or ovarian cancer, and we can offer valuable support from the perspective of someone who's been there.

Is it just for women, or can men with breast cancer take advantage as well?

SHARE is available for anyone -- male or female -- dealing with breast or ovarian cancer, whether they've been diagnosed with these diseases, have family members who are undergoing treatment, or simply want information about breast or ovarian cancer.

What have you noticed women like most about the services provided by SHARE?

Women who come to SHARE especially value our personal, one-on-one approach. We make sure that each person who calls our hotlines gets the chance to talk with a survivor who has had a similar experience with the disease (in terms of diagnosis or prescribed treatment) or who has a comparable life situation (age, family status, etc.). And we keep in touch with people for as long as they want, so these telephone relationships can last months, for the length of a caller's treatment and beyond.

Women who come to SHARE also really value the opportunity to share their experiences with other survivors in our support groups. It's for these reasons that many of the women we serve come back to SHARE and volunteer to help others who are dealing with these diseases.

What are the details of the Sept 21st event?

"A Second Helping of Life" takes place on Monday, September 21, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers. It's our annual fundraiser that features 25 women chefs from the NYC area who prepare their signature dishes and serve them to our guests with the help of celebrity "sous chefs." We also have auctions (live and silent) where people can bid on over 50 items, ranging from exclusive dinners to trips to London and Venice, as well as some one-of-a-kind opportunities such as an 8-hour session with Derek Warburton, stylist to celebrities and socialites, and a Vespa LX 50 Limited Edition Pink Color motor scooter. For more information, call 212-719-0364, ext. 239.

Why is your event titled, "A Second Helping of Life"?

We call our event "A Second Helping of Life" because SHARE's mission is to help people dealing with breast or ovarian cancer to reconnect with life even while dealing with a devastating disease. We do this by offering hope, support, and the assurance that you're not alone.

Where is SHARE located?

SHARE is located at 1501 Broadway (between 43rd and 44th Streets), in Times Square.

Where do the support groups meet?

Support groups meet in our office on Broadway, as well as in 14 other locations around the city, in Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
