Paterson police shoot man in buttocks

PATERSON Eyewitness News is told the man was in a beige Ford Expedition that refused to stop for police, who were responding to a 911 call of a person pointing a gun.

Police chased the SUV to Market Street, where the man got out of his vehicle allegedly wielding a gun.

A Paterson police officer shot the man once in the rear, but it wasn't enough to keep him from fleeing on foot. Police reportedly chased the man on foot for several blocks before finally catching him on Memorial Drive.

Officials say he was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson, where he was treated for the gunshot wound. Charges against him are pending.

His weapon was recovered at the scene.

A large quantity of marijuana, crack cocaine and two weapons were found in the SUV. Three other people in the car with him were charged with weapons possession and drugs.

The shooting is under investigation.
