Columbia University considers co-ed dorms

MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS The university is now considering a proposal to allow male and female students the option to dorm with members of the opposite sex.

The measure was brought up by the student government after it became apparent that many students were having a problem finding off-campus housing.

The new policy, however, would not apply to freshmen.

A spokesperson says there is no timetable for a final decision on gender-neutral housing, but if approved, residents on the Morningside Heights campus would be able to choose their roommates regardless of their sex.

This type of option is already available at NYU, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania, among others.
