Police arrest Long Island man for diamond thefts

SOUND BEACH Suffolk County police arrested the Sound Beach man on Tuesday for stealing diamond rings. The charges include grand larceny.

Authorities say the man contacted ring sellers on the Internet and set up meetings to have jewelry appraised. At those meetings, he'd swap fakes for the real rings.

In other thefts at jewelry stores, he would just grab the rings and run.

Police also charged the man's girlfriend with two counts of grand larceny. Her alleged role was not clear.
