Neighbor arrested in Monroe Twp. murder

MONROE TWP., N.J. Warren Burkey faces charges of murder and burglary in the death of Theresa Wysokowski, a 48-year-old married mother of three who neighbors said had recently become a grandmother. She was found in her bedroom early Friday after Monroe police responded to a 911 call that came from the home.

Burkey also faces a count involving an attack on a child. But county Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan would not disclose further details of that charge on Saturday, saying he wanted to protect the child's identity.

Bail was set at $3 million for the 32-year-old Burkey, who about a month ago had rented a room in the home of Wysokowski's mother, who lives next door to her daughter. He must post the entire amount before he can be released.

Kaplan said Burkey, a warehouse worker, was arrested just minutes after Wysokowski's body was found around 6 a.m. But authorities would not comment on whether Burkey made the 911 call.

An autopsy performed by the county medical examiner determined that Wysokowski died from multiple stab wounds.

Neighbors said Wysokowski and her husband had lived in the home for about 20 years and had three children - two sons and a daughter. Their oldest son had moved to his own home in the Middlesex County community last year, and his fiancee had given birth to twins in February.

Wysokowski's husband was at work when the stabbing occurred, Kaplan said. The couple and their two younger children lived in the home.
