Bloomberg to examine London's security cameras

NEW YORK

Bloomberg was already scheduled to travel to Berlin Tuesday to accept the 2010 Henry A. Kissinger Prize. The city said Friday the mayor added a stop in London that morning.

Bloomberg plans to tour a closed-circuit television facility in London to examine its "ring of steel" surveillance program. The network of cameras was the inspiration for a 3,000-camera system being installed in lower Manhattan. A similar system is being planned for midtown.

Some have pointed to the Times Square bomb plot last week as another example of why the city needs such surveillance systems.
