Prosecutors say a New York City rape case that lingered unsolved for nearly 17 years has been linked to a Virginia prisoner through DNA.

Alberto Barriera pleaded not guilty Monday in a Manhattan court to raping and robbing a 16-year-old girl entering her apartment building in December 1993.

His lawyer says he hasn't yet been able to talk with Barriera at length about the charges.

Manhattan prosecutors say a DNA sample from the attack was matched with Barriera last March. Virginia authorities had put his DNA in a national system after he was convicted of drug charges there.

Virginia Department of Corrections records show the 46-year-old Barriera is serving a slightly more than seven-year term. He was sentenced last year in a Virginia Beach court.
