The fire broke out inside a four-story apartment building at 651 Greene Avenue just after 6:00 a.m.
The fire spread to the second, third and fourth floors of the building.
Officials say an elderly woman inside the building was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Fire Marshals are investigating to determine the cause of the fire. Officials say there is nothing at this point that indicates it's suspicious.
