NY corrections officer charged in shooting

CORTLANDT, N.Y.

Troopers responding to a 911 call around 4:15 a.m. Saturday found 27-year-old Richard Kraemer in the street in the Westchester County town of Cortlandt. Police say Kraemer dropped his 9mm handgun and ran off, but eventually surrendered.

The victim was treated for a leg injury at Westchester County Medical Center.

Kraemer was charged with assault, criminal use of a firearm, menacing a police officer, and criminal mischief. Troopers didn't know if he had a lawyer on Sunday.

State police Lt. Dominick Chiumento said it's unclear whether the shooting was intentional or accidental.

Kraemer works at Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill.
