NEW YORK CITY

Excessive drinking kills 1,500 people in New York City each year.

Alcohol abuse also results in 100,000 hospitalizations and 78,000 emergency room visits annually.

The department says those numbers more than doubled between 2003 and 2009.

It warns excessive drinking is linked to increased risk for depression, suicide, and even homicide.
