Operation Santa begins

NEW YORK

Caitlyn and 6-year-old Joshua are among the many children hoping for help through the New York post office's Operation Santa program.

This year's effort was launched Tuesday at the main post office in Manhattan. It opens to the public on Wednesday.

New York postal officials say their Santa program is the largest in the country. It gets about 500,000 letters a year.

In her letter, Caitlyn says she and Joshua have been good. But their mom is unemployed.

She says there are holes in her shoes and her toes hurt when it snows. She's also hoping for a coat, a hat, and "maybe some mittens."
