Family grieving after deadly hit-and-run

ENGLEWOOD, N.J.

On Christmas Eve, 57-year-old Paul Kudowitz was hit by an SUV and then left to die in the street just steps from his home.

Police have more clues in the case, but it remains unsolved at this point.

"It's been a horrible nightmare that you can't wake up from," said Ricki Kudowitz, Paul's widow.

Ricki Kudowitz says she's still learning how to live without her husband.

"We miss him terribly," Kudowitz said.

A hit-and-run driver killed Dr. Paul Kudowitz on Christmas Eve.

He was a well-known figure in Englewood's Jewish community.

The 57-year-old anesthesiologist was walking home from a Friday night prayer service.

Police say he was struck and killed by an SUV.

He died near the intersection of Broad Avenue and Allison Court, just feet away from the front door of his home.

"He was a good person, he didn't deserve to die the way he died," Kudowitz said.

Investigators believe they know the type of vehicle involved in the hit-and-run crash and the type of damage that vehicle sustained.

The driver got away but may have left enough solid evidence behind.

Some of the debris gathered by investigators at the scene on Christmas Eve matches a mid-90's Chevrolet SUV.

"To leave the scene is something we can't tolerate and something we will use every resource we have to find out who it is," said John Molinelli, the Bergen County Prosecutor.

Englewood police have placed an electronic billboard at the scene of the hit-and-run asking for tips.

The flashing light almost beams into the living room where Dr. Kudowitz's six children and his grandchildren now gather.

"I thank God that I have my children, it's a piece of him," Kudowitz said.

Together they give Ricki Kudowitz the strength she needs to handle her grief.

"It's not going to bring my husband back. But we'll feel [with] justice a little bit of closure," Kudowitz said.
