NY lawmakers to protest spending cuts

NEW YORK

While the deal prevented a government shutdown, local leaders say working families, seniors and immigrants will feel the cuts.

Some of the programs that could lose money include community development grants for low and moderate income families, the Workforce Investment Act (which provides job training) and Head Start (which offers free childcare).

Bronx democrat Rep. Elliot Engle said he will vote against the current plan.

Funding for public housing and food assistance could also be cut.
