Those living in the Tri-State area are encouraged to take a stroll for those who might have difficulty doing so, on Sunday, May 15th, at the 2011 Arthritis Walk. The walk, which will take place at 10 a.m. at Manhattan's historic Battery Park, is the signature event for the Arthritis Foundation. Not only is it a way of getting exercise and helping a worthwhile cause, it represents a celebration of movement -- under the theme of "Let's Move Together" -- and a way to make a positive impact on the lives of people living with arthritis.

As those running the event can tell you, moving for just 30 minutes per day can ease joint pain, improve mobility and reduce fatigue. For more information on this nationwide initiative, visit

The walk helps raise funds for research, education and life improvement programs in 250 communities across the country -- bettering the lives of about 50 million Americans each year.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The park's entrance is located across from 17 State St. There is no fee to register, but participants who raise $100 or more will receive a T-shirt. Those interested may also go online to register or donate money on behalf of an individual walker, team or the event itself. Site visitors can also register to volunteer.

Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Atlanta, the Arthritis Foundation has multiple service points located throughout the country. Its mission is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases.

Event proceeds will go in part to help local institutions such as the NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases and the Hospital for Special Surgery.
