NEW YORK Starting at 10 a.m. at the Boys & Girls High School in Brooklyn, Body Sculpt of New York and fitness expert Vincent Ferguson will host the 8th annual Children's Sports & Fitness Expo to encourage the importance of physical fitness and healthy eating.
The free event will cater to thousands a young visitors as they participate in a wide range of sports clinics including basketball, archery, tennis, fencing, golf, hip-hop dance, soccer, hula hoop, volleyball and Zumba classes. The list of activities also includes cooking demonstrations, health screenings, nutrition classes, games and prizes. For festival updates and information, visit www.bodysculpt.org. Ferguson, who founded Body Sculpt of New York in 1989, started the expo as a result of seeing school-aged children in his community who would would rather obsess over video games and computer apps instead of going outside for classic running, jumping and bike riding.
The event will include a guest appearance by the famed DJ Diamond Kuts, who has teamed up with Body Scuplt as part of the "Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit!" campaign. At 20-something years of age, the former Black Entertainment Television personality is a vegan. Before her spot on BET's music show "The Deal" and the expansion of her DJ and radio career Kuts (born Tina Dunham) incorporated running on a treadmill for 30 minutes a day no less than three times a week into her schedule.
At the suggestion of a friend who was researching food fundamentals, Kuts tried eating vegan and noticed how she lost weight and was able to maintain the weight loss even when she couldn't get to the gym. A year-and-a-half later, she maintains her weight and performs better and she credits it all to eating healthy. Besides Kuts' involvement, other local celebrities have gotten involved with the initiative including WNBA standout Cappie Pondexter of the New York Liberty, the New Jersey Nets dancers, Miss New York Latina USA Thatiana Diaz and Olympic gold medalist sprinter Natasha Hastings.
