30 years since appearance of HIV/AIDS

This week marks 30 years since the first federal announcement concerning HIV and AIDS.

The first cases in the United States dealt with five young, gay men with pneumonia and severely lowered immune systems.

It took three years to identify it as AIDS.

So far, 60 million people have been infected, and 30 million have died from the disease.

But researchers say they've come a long way since those dark, early days, developing drug therapies that rapidly suppress the virus.
