Health officials in Suffolk County are reporting new cases of whooping cough.

Last week, 13 elementary and middle school students in Smithtown came down with pertussis, which is the medical name for whooping cough.

The number of cases have now more than tripled with 38 from Smithtown, one from Huntington, and one from Babylon.

Suffolk County officials confirmed that a 7-week-old baby died back in April from pertussis.

Whooping cough is highly contagious.

Officials are urging parents to make sure their children's immunizations are up to date.

Parents and physicians who have questions about pertussis may contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services' Division of Public Health at 631-853-3055.
