More cases of Whooping cough on LI

SUFFOLK COUNTY

Last week, 13 elementary and middle school students in /*Smithtown*/ came down with pertussis, which is the medical name for whooping cough.

The number of cases have now more than tripled with 38 from Smithtown, one from /*Huntington*/, and one from /*Babylon*/.

Suffolk County officials confirmed that a 7-week-old baby died back in April from pertussis.

Whooping cough is highly contagious.

Officials are urging parents to make sure their children's immunizations are up to date.
