Teen busted for DWI on a go-kart

SHELTER ISLAND

Shelter Island police said 18-year-old Lennon Sarfarti was stopped while driving the go-cart on a public highway around 4 a.m. on Thursday. Police said his breath test exceeded the .08 percent level for drunkenness.

Shelter Island Police Chief James Read said Sarfarti had driven about two miles with one minor clinging to the back of the go-cart and another sitting on his lap.

He was charged with felony charges of driving while intoxicated under a 2009 state statute known as Leandra's Law, which calls for up to four years in prison for driving while drunk with a minor in the vehicle. Police also charged him with endangering the welfare of a child.
