Bath salts or drugs?

Authorities say they've removed some 1,400 packets of synthetic drugs labeled as "bath salts" and similar products from shops on the Wildwood boardwalk.

The items were surrendered by shop owners visited Tuesday by state and city inspectors as part of a New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs summer safety initiative.

Officials say the packets of powder marketed as bath salts or incense can be smoked or snorted and mimic the effects of cocaine or methamphetamines.

Consumer Affairs spokesman Neal Buccino said the shop owners were persuaded to surrender the items voluntarily after being informed that the substances were likely illegal in New Jersey, and no charges were filed.

Officials estimated the value of the products at $35,000.
