The Long Island Rail Road will spend $3.5 million next year on improving its communication links to riders.

One of the biggest complaints is the lack of reliable information, especially during major service disruptions.

Under the new plan, riders will be able to get real-time information with smartphones.

The railroad currently relies on E-mail for trains running more than 10 minutes late.
