There is tighter security on the subways starting Friday because of a 40 percent increase in crime.

The NYPD says this will be the first weekend for Operation Total Impact, with the department pulling extra manpower from its precincts and housing patrols.

Statistics show that nearly half of all subway crimes occur on Friday through Sunday, and roughly two-thirds of the crimes happen on trains.

Major felonies underground are up more than 17 percent.

Police say thieves are targeting electronic devices like cell phones, iPads and iPods.
