Work on the L line impacting Williamsburg shops

WILLIAMSBURG

NYC Transit stopped running the L on Saturdays and Sundays nearly a dozen times since July citing needed track work, cable replacements, and fixing up a fence at the Canarsie rail yard.

More blackout dates are expected to hit in February and March, a transit spokesman said.

The repair work is hitting hard on shops in the Brooklyn community. Many businesses are struggling to survive the multi-billion dollar decade long project.

Business owners question why the work cannot be done late at night rather than weekends, especially with the holidays coming.

Transit officials say the work is done the weekend in order to minimize the number of riders who are impacted.

There is a shuttle bus that carries passengers back and forth from Manhattan to Williamsburg and Bushwick when the train is down.

Borough President's Senior Advisor Carlo Scissura discussed the issue on Eyewitness News First at 4:00.
