The fight in Florida

January 26, 2012

Republicans who once swore allegiance to Ronald Reagan's so-called 11th Commandment - Thou Shalt Not Speak Ill of Another Republican - have thrown that bible out with the bathwater.

Newt Gingrich - down and up and down and up and then (fill in the blank) in the polls - nearly had steam coming out of his ears today, he was so angry at Mitt Romney and the Super PAC ads his supporters are airing in Florida.

Now comes Bob Dole - the veteran U.S. Senator and GOP political sacrificial lamb in 1996 when he won the nomination to run against Bill Clinton. In an open letter about Gingrich blasts the former House Speaker with ditties like these:

"… I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it, and I'm not certain he knew either…"

"Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall."

As for Gingrich disputing his firing as House leader, Doll says, "I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations."

So much for the 11th Commandment.

I'm just sayin'.

We'll have the latest from the campaign trail, tonight at 11.

One more political item I found fascinating today, and it involves Hillary Clinton. At a State Dept. briefing today, the Secretary of State repeated her desire to leave government after the next election, meaning that if Pres. Obama is re-elected, she would stay only as long as it takes Mr. Obama to replace her.

And then she dropped what to some long-time Clinton watchers was something of a political bombshell: She's not following the Republican Presidential primary race. None of it. Yes, she admitted, it's a little odd not to be involved. But she's concentrating on her job, not politics.

Say what? She even went so far as to acknowledge she hasn't seen any of the GOP candidates' debates. Not one.

Would love to hear what you think about this.

And while I'm at it, if you've a mind to, and if you're on Facebook, please CLICK HERE to subscribe to my blog via Facebook. It's easy! And thanks.

Speaking of social media - the rapper known as Fifty Cent has placed an unusual beat with a woman whose "handle" is "@MyBestAssets." If the Giants lose to the Patriots, he'll pose nude on Twitter.

Kinda makes you want to root for the Patriots.

I'm just sayin'.

And our Jamie Roth tonight takes a closer look overstressed kids, especially in high school. More homework than ever before, more pressure to succeed than ever before. So what's it really doing to our kids? Jamie's eye-opening report airs tonight at 11.

We'll also have breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's wet AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Liz Cho (in for Sade Baderinwa) and me, tonight at 11.
