Heavy flames and smoke could be seen pouring from the Avalon Garden City Apartment Complex on Ellington Avenue East just after 11:00 a.m.
The complex offers a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and town homes for rent, according to its website.
The blaze quickly spread through the roofs of multiple buildings. The entrance to the Meadowbrook Parkway and several streets near the complex were shutdown while firefighters worked.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
