Fire destroys upstate NY hotel-turned-condos

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y.

The Middletown Times-Herald Record reports (http://bit.ly/Ipyami ) that more than 40 fire companies from Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties battled the fire for hours at Grandview Palace Saturday evening. Buses took residents to the fieldhouse at Sullivan County Community College.

The condo complex in Loch Sheldrake, 85 miles northwest of New York City, opened in 1944 as Brown's Hotel, featured in the movie "Dirty Dancing."

The town of Fallsburg threatened to condemn the complex two months ago for fire and safety violations.

Management could not be reached for comment Sunday as office phones were inoperable.
