The incident happened in a secure locker training area that is accessible only to security officers. The public was never in danger.
The guard was cleaning his gun in the training area because they are not permitted to take their weapons outside of the building.
The guard was taken to Cornell Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.
Museum spokesman Harold Holzer said the public was never in any danger.
