$12,000 reward offered in elderly Bronx woman's murder

NEW YORK

The daughter of 88-year-old Evelyn Shapiro found her mother's body in the hallway of her fifth-floor apartment in the Pelham Parkway Houses Saturday.

The killer may have followed her home from a local market.

She'd been struck in the head, and groceries were scattered everywhere.

Police are investigating the killing of an 88-year-old woman in the Bronx.

Shapiro was well known in the community, and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz issued a statement calling her a "pillar of her community."

He said whoever killed her was "a savage."
