Firefighters were battling a third-alarm fire in New Jersey early Thursday.

The fire broke out at the three-story building on State Street, near Williams Street, in Perth Amboy just after 4 a.m.

Firefighters surrounded the building and were attacking the flames from a tower ladder and from surrounding rooftops.

No injuries were reported, but hundreds of residents were left homeless because of the blaze. The building where the fire broke out was completely destroyed, and two others were damaged by the flames.

Firefighters worked for hours to get the fire under control.
