Missing dog travels 500 miles to find owner

MYRTLE BEACH

Bucky the black labrador couldn't bear the thought of being away from his owner, even if it meant traveling 500 miles to find him.

Bucky is 3 years old and very friendly. For owner Mark Wessells, he's a best friend.

"Dogs are loyal, and he's just really smart," Wessells said. "He knows, you know, I can have a conversation with him. He'll talk back."

In January, Mark left Bucky with his dad in Virginia because he couldn't have a dog at his home in Myrtle Beach. But a short time later, Bucky disappeared.

Somehow, he traveled nearly 500 miles to the Grand Strand, and two weeks ago he was taken in by a family in Carolina Forest. The new owner brought him to Grand Strand Animal Hospital, where they discovered a microchip. The, they called Mark.

"I thought I was gonna cry," he said. "He definitely recognized me instantly. He still remembers some of his old commands and everything....it's almost like he never left."

How Bucky made it here is still in question, but dogs have a strong sense of smell and direction. And it looks like bucky was determined to come home.

Now, Mark says he's never going to leave Bucky behind again.
