Midtown buildings near dangling crane reopened

NEW YORK

Buildings Department spokesman Tony Sclafani said Sunday the operation to secure the boom of the tower crane on West 57th Street is now complete.

He says all streets in the area are being reopened, though it excludes lanes on the north side of 57th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues.

Sclafani says some buildings may not have utilities at this point and need to be turned on.

Heavy winds likely caused the crane boom to collapse. Engineers had to climb the 74-story building in the midst of the storm to inspect the crane.

Some neighboring buildings were evacuated, including a hotel with 900 guests.
