What If?

December 4, 2012

I know, "if" is a huge word or, as my dad used to say, "if my grandmother had had (fill in the word), she would have been my grandfather."

What if Anna Wintour, the Devil Wears Prada girl herself, became Ambassador to France or the U.K.?

What if Hillary Clinton ran for Mayor of New York?

Both water cooler talkers are out there today, although the former may be more viable than the latter.

Wintour, a big supporter of Pres. Obama's, won't confirm one way or another about her being in possible line for an Ambassadorship. But – despite her rep as a tough-as-nails Cruella Deville-style, she is cultured and powerful and quite comfortable in the rubbing-elbows world of the upper crust.

Secretary of State Clinton is a different story. Mayor of New York? It apparently wasn't her idea, but instead Mayor Bloomberg brought it up. She said she wasn't interested. But the story leaked of that exploratory phone call a couple of months ago and it's the fallout that's the story today. (We first reported it last night at 11.)

Does Mayor Bloomberg think that the current crop of candidates aren't worthy of replacing him? And what to make of Council Speaker Christine Quinn's reaction to all this, after the Mayor is making all the moves suggesting he'll endorse her, and after she backed his call for the City's rules to be cast aside so he could run for a thumb-your-nose-at-term-limits law and run for a third term?

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the dining room of Ms. Quinn and her new bride? Was she about to be thrown off the political cliff?

We'll have any reaction and new developments, tonight at 11.

Also at 11, police in Manhattan right now are questioning a suspect in the brutal death yesterday of a 58-year-old man who was pushed off a subway station platform and onto the tracks of an oncoming train. He was killed. Surveillance video from other subway stations helped cops identify the suspect. There could be a big development in this case tonight.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Laura Behnke (in for Rob Powers) with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
