Groundbreaking for new Long Beach boardwalk

LONG BEACH

Crews this weekend will start rebuilding the 2-mile long boardwalk destroyed by the storm in Long Beach.

Hundreds of people showed up Saturday to watch the city formally launch the reconstruction project.

City leaders say the new boardwalk will be made of stronger wood than the old one.

It will be built at an expected cost of $44 million.

Long Beach was among the worst-hit communities during last October's storm.

The entire length of the wooden boardwalk had to be ripped out, leaving only concrete support beams.

The project is expected to be completed by early November, but some sections will be reopened before that, as soon as they're completed.

Residents and businesses in Long Beach say the boardwalk and beach are vital magnets in drawing visitors to the seaside city.
