This group of traditional Ethiopian musicians and dancers returns to Lincoln Center with a performance rooted in ancient Asmari tradition. The six-member ensemble features dancers, a singer, and instruments that include kebero drums, a one-stringed fiddle (a masenko) and a five or six-stringed lyre (a krar). The group is led by Melaku Belay, dubbed "a happily superlative artist" by The New York Times, and the world's foremost interpreter of the athletic Ethiopian trance dance called eskista, which influenced many hip hop dance movements.

Led by Meg Reichardt (of The Roulette Sisters) and Kurt Hoffman (The Ordinaires and They Might Be Giants), these New York artists play French swing music from the 1920s–40s. The style of Les Chauds Lapins vacillates from romantic to quirky and from retro to modern, combining elements of early American jazz, swing, forgotten French classics, and the lushness of a Bernard Hermann film soundtrack in its arrangements.

Free: Amplified

Free: Amplified is a multi-media concert that invokes and remixes Free, the only published book of poetry by the African-American performer and educator Sekou Sundiata. The show will feature New York and Los Angeles-based poets and artists who came of age in the 1990s as well as a new generation of poets in their 20s inspired by both Sudiata and his heirs. The guest roster will include HPrizm, Douglas Kearney, Kamala Sankaram, Kassa Overall, Lisette Santiago, and more.

Free:Amplified is presented as part of Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisited, a seven-month New York City-wide retrospective featuring theater, poetry, music concerts, and humanities events curated and produced by MAPP International Productions through a major partnership of 17 cultural and educational institutions.

Let Freedom Swing

Jazz grew out of the African-American community in New Orleans at the turn of 20th century. It mingled the music of people who came to the U.S.—by choice or by force—with the sounds of those already living here. Vocalist Brianna Thomas, pianist Sam Reider, and guitarist Justin Poindexter will be featured in this concert illustrating the ideas of American democracy, the struggle for freedom, and the beauty of self-expression through the lens of America's most democratic art form: jazz.
Presented in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) serves three primary roles: presenter of artistic programming, national leader in arts and education and community relations, and manager of the Lincoln Center campus. A presenter of more than 3,000 free and ticketed events, performances, tours, and educational activities annually, LCPA's series include American Songbook, Great Performers, Lincoln Center Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Midsummer Night Swing, Mostly Mozart Festival, White Light Festival, and the Emmy Award-winning Live From Lincoln Center. As manager of the Lincoln Center campus, LCPA provides support and services for the Lincoln Center complex and the 11 resident organizations. In addition, LCPA led a series of major capital projects, now complete, on behalf of the resident organizations across the campus.
