Young girl rescued from Garden State Plaza Mall escalator

PARAMUS

The escalator from the lower level to the first floor of Macy's is now closed as officials conduct their investigation.

It was 11:30 a.m. when the young girl got on the escalator with her mother and younger brother.

Somehow her foot got stuck in the moving metal stairs when they reached the top.

The response was quick as police, fire, and EMT's rushed to the mall, but still a Macy's spokesperson says it took "a while" to get the girl's foot out.

Macy's employees, even people just shopping, helped take the landing apart to get the girl's leg freed.

Within minutes of Macy's shutting down that escalator, word got out to parents all over the mall. Parents tell Eyewitness News spoke to didn't seem too surprised.

Right now, Eyewitness News doesn't know what the girl had on her feet, or why she got stuck.

The young girl was taken to Hackensack Medical Center with serious leg injuries.

Macy's issued the following statement:
"Our immediate thoughts and prayers go out to the young girl and her family. We are currently conducting a full internal investigation into this morning's unfortunate incident at our store."
