Coming up: The Stars of NY Dance, Nov. 7

NEW YORK On Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, located at One University Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn, The 2013 Stars of New York Dance returns and will bring Brooklyn leaders together to dance for a cause and honor artist, author and philanthropist Danny Simmons, founder and vice president of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, for his longstanding commitment to uplifting the lives of children and youth through the arts.

United Way of New York City, MetroPlus Health Plan, WABC-TV, Anheuser-Busch Stella Artois, Our Time Press Newspaper and Profiles 88 Magazine are sponsors of the 2013 Stars of New York Dance.

"The Stars of New York Dance is more than a fabulous event. It's an ongoing program that teaches kids discipline, cooperation and determination. Through the 'Stars' dance program, these young people unleash their imaginations and find the freedom within themselves to reach and unlock unlimited potential," said Simmons.

The Stars of New York Dance is a charitable, thrilling and judged dance competition—similar to Dancing with the Stars—for New York City leaders that raises dance scholarship funds for children from low-income communities to help them develop discipline, confidence and self-esteem to succeed in school and in life.

Six Brooklyn leaders (the "Dancing Stars") will partner with six professional dance artists that teach and perform with a community-based dance organization. The "Dancing Stars" will compete to win a $5,000 dance scholarship award for their dance partners' dance organization that will provide free or subsidized dance education to children and youth, and pay for their dance tuition fees, class uniforms, shoes and dance costumes.

2013 dance competitors include:

  • Carlo A. Scissura, President & CEO, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce
  • Elwanda Young, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, United Way of New York City
  • L. Joy Williams, President, Brooklyn NAACP
  • The Honorable Betty Staton, Executive Director, Bedford Stuyvesant Community Legal Services
  • Robert L. Henry, Executive Director, Frank R. Bell Funeral Home, Inc.
  • Minister Joel Youngblood, Chief Operating Officer, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church

Special guest presenters include event host and host of "Inside City Hall" on NY 1 News Errol Louis, BAM President Karen Brooks Hopkins and Brooklyn Arts Council President Ella J. Weiss. Other special guests will be announced.
