Union Township 3-alarm condo fire leaves 18 families homeless

CLINTON TOWNSHIP

The three-alarm fire broke out around 7 p.m. Saturday in a bush outside the Union Hill Condo Complex. The wind quickly fueled the flames, which burned for several hours before being brought under control.

Dozens of firefighters from several departments were called in to battle the blaze.

Fire Chief Walt Dorf said that in his three decades of fighting fires, he has never seen anything like this.

"The wind gusts were probably 40 miles an hour when I arrived here and quickly spread the fire across the roof as well as inside the building," Dorf said.

No injuries were reported, but more than a dozen units were severely damaged or destroyed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The displaced residents were taken a shelter and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
