Paul Batterson, Jr., of East Moriches, will be indicted by a grand jury in Suffolk County.
Police say he shot and killed 45-year-old Francisco Pirir during the botched robbery in December.
Investigators are still looking for another suspect in the attempted robbery.
Batterson is charged with second-degree murder.
Officers were called to the home on December 8 after a 911 caller reported that two masked men broke into the house, announced a robbery and shot two men.
The suspects fled the scene.
Pirir was killed, while a second male resident was shot in the hand and treated and released from a local hospital.
