Mykhailo is living with his grandfather, who is ill, in Ukraine, which is currently embroiled in political turmoil.
"It's not about the politics, it's just about the child ... I just want my child with me, that's all," said Natalia Kuzmina.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) has gotten involved and is trying to help the couple. He has asked the U.S. National Visa Center and the United States embassy in Kiev to expedite Mykhailo's travel documents.
"It's made even more difficult by the fact that there's a surge of violence, protests and clashes in this town ... where this child and the grandfather live," said Israel.
Although the boy's green card might be issued faster, the parents are still waiting for travel documents they're told could take several months.
