Police say the 64-year old was hit by a southbound train at 50th Street and Eighth Avenue at about 11 a.m.
According to investigators, he jumped onto the track to retrieve personal property that he had dropped, possibly a necklace.
Service on the A, C, and E lines was disrupted while police investigated the incident.
The victim's identity has not yet been released.
