Long Island family angry that driver charged with hitting mother will get off with slap on wrist

BRIDGEHAMPTON, L.I. (WABC) -- A family in the Hamptons is angry and upset that the man they say killed their mother is facing nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

The nationally-known cookbook author was popular in her community.

"I saw her everyday for the last 40 years so there's a big hole," said the victim's daughter, Sybille Van Kempen.

Sybille Van Kempen says her mother Anna Pump meant everything to her.

The author was a ball of energy. Even at 81 years old she walked two miles everyday and graciously met guests at her inn in Bridgehampton and at Van Kempen's shop next door.

"She loved standing in the store greeting everyone," said Van Kempen.

On October 5th Pump was walking in the crosswalk across Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton when she was hit and killed by a car.

"It's pretty terrible. We miss her so much," said Van Kempen.

The driver of that car, Luis Ortega, was charged for driving without a license.

That's a misdemeanor and only comes with a small fine.

"I think it's not safe to have people like that who put themselves behind the wheel of a car," said Van Kempen. "There should be some recourse. This is not right. Something must be done."
