Man tries to rob elderly woman on UES

UPPER EAST SIDE Police say the incident happened last Wednesday at about 6 p.m. on East 94th Street and Third Avenue.

Authorities say Elsie Barreto, 83, was returning to her apartment when she was followed into her building by the suspect. Once inside, the suspect grabbed the victim in a choke hold and attempted to remove her property. When she fought back, police say the suspect punched her in the face and fled the location.

EMS responded to the scene and transported Barreto to an area hospital, where she was treated and released in stable condition. She was left with a black eye and bruises all over.

A security camera captured the suspect as he followed her into the building. He is described as a black man in his 20s, standing 5-foot-10 and wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, light colored T-shirt and dark pants.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the NYPD's CrimeStoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. The public can also text tips to 274637, then enter tip577.
