$5,000 reward offered for NY statue's return

COMMACK, N.Y. Shana Kay had just completed her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin at Madison when she died of viral encephalitis shortly after July 4th. Her family commissioned the statue outside the Commack Library, with an inscription noting the 19-year-old woman had "found inspiration in the magic of reading."

The statue was reported stolen last week. Detectives have contacted local scrap metal dealers, but also suspect it may have been stolen as a prank. It is valued at $5,000 and weighs between 150 and 300 pounds.
