NEW YORK
The accident occurred Monday as a barge was transferring the oil
to a freight ship. It happened about one mile northeast of the
Staten Island Ferry Terminal at Bayridge Anchorage.
By midday Tuesday, the Coast Guard was able to clean up most of
the estimated 300 gallons of oil that spilled in the water and on
the ship.
Crews had immediately deployed a boom that trapped most of the
oil between the barge and the ship.
