Mexican teen reunited with dying mother

PORT JEFFERSON, NY Thirteen-year-old Irvin Vega clutched Marta Perez Martinez for 20 minutes at a hospice in Port Jefferson on Tuesday. He buried his head in her shoulder, crying and trembling.

Martinez left her rural Mexican village in 2004 to find work on Long Island. Irvin stayed behind with his grandparents.

Despite being overwhelmed by requests from Haiti earthquake victims, immigration officials allowed Irvin into the U.S. on a three-week humanitarian visa.

The community group La Casa Comunal and Rep. Steve Israel helped grant Martinez's wish to see her son before dying of colon cancer.
