Park detail suspended following shooting

NEWARK, N.J.

That follows the recent shooting death of a Georgia man by one of the squad's detectives.

County Sheriff Armando Fontoura says operations at Newark's Branch Brook Park were put on hold to "make some adjustments," adding that more uniformed officers would now be patrolling the site.

Fontoura declined to discuss specific changes that may be made to the park detail, which was started about five years following numerous public lewdness complaints.

Defarra Gaymon, a 48-year-old married father of four who headed the Atlanta City Employees Credit Union, was shot in the park July 16.

Authorities say he was engaged in a sex act when he approached the detective. A chase ensued, and the officer fired one shot after Gaymon reached in his pocket and lunged at him.
